Save & Optimise Virtual Disk Storage for FREE.

This article demonstrates a FREE way of saving/optimising Virtual Disk storage space using software which is freely available. Include is :

1. How report which disks are over-allocated using our very own free Vdisk Waste Finder application
2. How to resize over-allocated vdisks using a free open source application called “gparted
3. How to align the vdisk including system disks to a 64k start sector. This increases performance and reduces disk latency using a free open source application called “gparted

Don't buy on a Promise

In answer to recent pre-announcements that been made about new Veeam Backup developments namely www.surebackup.com  I have noticed recently that some of our competitors are threatening catch up with our backup product. Well here’s my thoughts:

Whilst our competitors sell the future meaning they like to promise to add functionality so you buy now and suffer later, Veeam sells the present meaning Veeam Backup is the best solution NOW so you buy now and enjoy forever. Don’t be enticed to buy into on a promise as most of competitors don’t come through.  Let me give you an example: I used to work in distribution and we were a UK distributor for one of Veeam’s competitors. Only because those guys at the time were the only shop in town. In 2006 they published a roadmap detailing their main plans to support 3 features normally seen in legacy tape solutions.  2010 those 3 features are still their main plans on their roadmap. See what I mean. I’m being vague but it’s not difficult to work what 3 features I’m talking about and which vendor I refer to.
So before you dive in on a promise think about it and look around. Look at the evidence and get feedback about the facts from Partner's and the internet: Blogs and Forums.

Now back to www.surebackup.com now you could say we are trying to selling the future expect for 2 points:

1.       We haven’t told you what www.surebackup.com is all about yet.
2.       You are only gonna have to wait a few weeks to see what we are up to.

Smile

Enjoy NOW don’t suffer later.

vswitch local speed
Written by Administrator

A client told me today he thought he was having poor backup performance over a virtual network. But when he started debugging he noticed that it wasn't just Backup that was the problem it was all network IO through a local vswitch. He started the conversation by asking me what I expect to see in network throughput between 2 VMs localised on the same vswitch. He informed me no matter what he tried in terms of using a vswitch with/without a pNIC and trying different types of vNIC he couldn't push 240mbits/s. He asked him the obvious question which was "Is there anything else happening on the system that could be impacting net performance, like CPU overhead" and the answer was "no".

So I decided to test it for myself.
